PHS grappler places 4th at Cole tourney
Pawhuska High School wrestlers Ryan Parks placed fourth while R.J. McCann and Marshall Corwin took sixth places in their weight classes at the Joe Cole Classic tournament Friday and Saturday in Cleveland.
The Pawhuska High School wrestling team took six wrestlers, scoring 40 team points to place 17th in the 36-team tournament. Comanche won the tournament with 266.5 points. Skiatook, Cleveland, Mannford and Sand Springs Junior Varsity rounded out the top 5. Five teams — Bartlesville, Broken Arrow JV, Catoosa, Cushing and Harrah — didn’t take any wrestlers to the tournament.
Parks bounced back from a fall to Saige Martin of Berryhill at the 1:18 mark in the 120-pound weight class. Parks and Martin would meet again in the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Parks won five straight matches before losing a 5-2 decision in the third-pace match to Skylar Galloway of Mannford.
Parks picked up major decision over Maddie Tucker of Cleveland and Chase Linder of Ponca City Senior. He recorded a fall at 2:00 over Dakota Richards of Berryhill. In Consolation Round 5, he earned a 3-2 decision over Logan Lanphear of Barnsdall.
The win over Lanphear set up a rematch with Martin. This time out, Parks defeated Martin, 12-3.
In the third place match, Golloway of Mannford won a 5-2 decision over Parks.
Corwin took sixth in the 126 pound division. He had a bye in the championship bracket opening round. In the second round, Corwin pinned Chris Hall of McCloud at the 2-minute mark. Corwin was pinned by Jackson Bordwine of Mannford in the championship round quarterfinals. In the consolation round, Corwin received in round 4, but picked up a pin over Hunter Williams of Inola in round 5.
Corwin faced Josh Taylor of Skiatook in the consolation semifinals. Taylor won by fall over Corwin at the 2:57 mark of the match.
McCann picked up four pins on the way to the consolation semifinals.
In the championship bracket opening round, McCann pinned Xavier Mafala of Sapulpa at 1:46. He lost by fall to Nenebag Biggoose of Ponca City Senior at the 1:22 mark, which sent McCann to the consolation bracket.
In consolation bracket rounds 2, 3 and 4, McCann recorded pins over Griffin Campbell, Metro Christian Academy, Remington Payne, Mannford, and Sincere Sanders, McLain.
In round 5, McCann won a 5-4 decision over Chris Kirby of Sands Springs Junior Varsity to reach the consolation semifinals.
Ethan Hamrick of Comanche, picked up a fall over McCann at the 2:00 mark.
At 113 pounds, Pawhuska’s Landon McCartney had a first-round bye in the championship bracket opening round. In the second round, Kaleb Harris of Sallisaw picked up a fall over McCartney at the 1:30 mark.
McCartney didn’t take to the mat again until the fourth round in the consolation bracket. Karson Cue of McLoud, recorded a fall over McCartney at the 2:00 mark.
Blue Star had two bouts in the 145 weight division.
In the Championship bracket, Nate Asbill of Sallisaw, won by fall over Star at the 0:23 mark. In the consolation round, Tyler Kragel, Glenpoll won by fall over Star at the 0:35 mark.
Bryce Drummond wrested at 182 pounds for Pawhuska. He received a first-round by in the championship bracket. In the second round, Cody Connaughton of Skiatook won by fall at the 1:24 mark. In Consolation round 3, Isaac Guinn of Claremore won by fall over Drummond at 1:28.
