The Oklahoman's Super 30: Vian linebacker Xavin Lackey is 'very quiet' except for on the football field

Xavin Lackey isn’t the loudest man in the room.

Despite what attendees hear on Friday nights — Lackey a 6-foot-1, 218-pound linebacker for Vian making calls and saying what he needs to say to get his guys going — is quite the opposite off the field.

"I'm actually a very laidback person," Lackey said. "I don't really speak a lot.”

Lackey isn’t flamboyant, he isn’t animated and he doesn’t try to be the center of attention. But he gets his job done, especially on the football field.

Lackey is No. 22 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 list of the state’s top high school recruits in the 2022 class. Lackey holds offers from Iowa State, Memphis, Army, Air Force, Tulane, Dartmouth, Penn, and Northeastern State.

When he’s away from the many sports that he plays such as football, basketball and baseball, Lackey can be found at the lake fishing, riding horses or at a duck refuge hunting with his friends.

It’s quiet, relaxing and it keeps him entertained.

Vian linebacker Xavin Lackey is No. 22 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 list of the state’s top high school football recruits in the 2022 class.

“He is very quiet in class, very quiet in the locker room,” Vian coach Gary Willis said, “when he talks on the field, he’s jacked up. He doesn’t waste a lot of words and says what he means… It’s pretty cool.”

Lackey's play speaks for him.

Whenever he steps onto the field, the quiet hometown kid becomes one of the most fearsome, hard-hitting linebackers in the state.

“Once I get into game mode, it’s like a switch flips,” Lackey said.

When Lackey switches, his competitiveness is brought to light.

Whenever a running back is making his way through the line of scrimmage, Lackey loves the battle of hitting him straight on to see who's the better man of the down.

"I just get real excited when I see it’s just me and him," Lackey said.

His excitement shows.

More oftentimes than not, Lackey wins that battle, barreling his shoulder and putting the runner on his back. Last season, Lackey recorded 79 tackles and nine sacks to help lead Vian to a 9-2 season and the second round of the state playoffs.

But he’s not just great on the defensive end. His competitive spirit allows him to excel on the offensive side of the ball as well. Lackey lined up as a running back and rushed 80 times, barreling through defenders for 601 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

He's dominant and successful on both sides of the ball but he won't speak about it, he'll show you.

“People talk about his body language because he’s just laid back,” Willis said, “but when the balls snapped, it’s on and that’s all that matters to us. I want him to be who he is.”

Tulsa Metro Christian's Asher Link is brought down by Vian's Xavin Lackey during the Class 2A football state championship game at Wantland Stadium in Edmond on Dec. 14, 2019.
