Following a week off for the Christmas/New Year holidays, the Pawhuska High School basketball teams to get back in action this week.

The Lady Huskies and Huskies resumed the basketball campaign Tuesday night, Jan. 3, with home contests versus Newkirk.

“Newkirk’s girls are pretty good,” coach Lauri Lee said Monday. “And, our practices over the holidays weren’t very intense — but we’ll see how it goes.”

Prior to the break, both Pawhuska squads won two of their three matchups at the first Pawhuska Invitational Tournament.

The Class 2A Lady Huskies are 3-5 on the year after defeating Wesleyan Christian in their tourney opener and holding off Hominy, 36-33, in the third-place game. In between, the PHS girls lost to the 10-1 Glencoe Lady Panthers. Despite winning the Pawhuska title by beating another 2A school (Drumright), Glencoe dropped three spots to No. 6 in the OSSAA’s Class A rankings.

Pawhuska’s boys topped Shidler in their first game and then knocked off Hominy, 40-28, before losing to Glencoe’s 14th-ranked boys (9-2) in the finals. Following a deceptive 0-3 start, in which they were competitive each time out, coach Jake Chrustenson’s Huskies won four in a row before the Glencoe matchup.

“Glencoe shot well, especially from long range,” Christenson said. “Even though we lost, I’m hoping that game helps us to improve as a team.”

PHS is to play at Dewey on Friday night and then go back on the road, to Cleveland, on Saturday.

Next games at Oren Terrill Field House are set against Nowata on Jan. 10. Three nights after that, on Friday (Jan. 13), Pawhuska will play at Barnsdall.

The Huskies and Lady Huskies are to participate in the Dewey Basketball Tournament the following week, Jan. 16-21.

After road games at Nowata on Tuesday, Jan. 24, Pawhuska will be hosting Dewey on Monday, Jan. 30. Other home games are against Pawnee on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and versus Barnsdall on Friday, Feb. 10.

Efforts are under way to reschedule a home game with Hominy, which was canceled because the Bucks were competing for the 2A state football championship (which they won). The local coaches are hoping to play Hominy on Saturday, Jan. 28. If that were to happen, Pawhuska Basketball Hall of Fame ceremonies probably would be set for that night, the coaches said.

On most PHS game nights, junior-varsity action begins at 4 p.m., with the girls’ varsity game tipping off at 6 and the boys starting at 8.

Pawhuska’s junior-high basketball slate shows home games with Avant on Thursday, Jan. 12. Local matchups with Dewey on Thursday, Jan 26, are scheduled for the old gym. Nowata is to visity here on Monday, Feb. 6. Junior high contests get going at 5:30 p.m.
