Huskies continue homestand with crucial district showdown

Pawhuska’s quest for a seventh straight appearance in Oklahoma’s high school football postseason will be on the line Thursday night when the Huskies host District 2A-8 rival Commerce at Ormand Beach Stadium.

The Huskies should be in a vengeful mood against the Tigers following a disappointing non-district loss to the previously-win less Kansas Comets in Friday’s homecoming game.

PHS enters this week’s contest with a 1-5 season record that includes a 1-1 district mark. Commerce is 1-2 on 2A-8 and 3-4 overall. Last week, the Tigers fell to Wyandotte, 42-8, in a game played at Commerce. The Huskies lost two weeks ago at Wyandotte, 48-13.

Pawhuska head coach Joe Sindelar remains confident that the Huskies can correct their sometimes-erratic play in time to make a playoff run. Only district games remain on the PHS schedule. Next Friday, the Huskie squad travels to Oklahoma Union. Pawhuska is to host Chelsea on Oct. 30 before rapping up the slate at Nowata on Nov. 6.

Kickoff for the lone Thursday match-up of the regular season will be at 7:30 p.m. A year ago at Commerce, the Huskie squad pulled out a 19-16 victory over the Tigers. Without that, Pawhuska would never have secured a playoff berth.

As the late-great Yogi Berra was credited with saying: “It’s deja vu all over again.”
