PHS girls flash hot bats in pre-season exhibition

After warming up their bats in the annual PHS Alumni Softball Game, the Pawhuska High School Lady Huskies appeared ready to tackle the 2015 fastpitch regular season.

Pawhuska’s current varsity squad put on a hitting exhibition Saturday night in rolling over a team comprised of Lady Huskie players from the past. PHS junior Sydney Sellers provided one of the highlights of the contest by blasting a home run over the centerfield fence.

Following their Alumni Game win, the Lady Huskies continued to hone their batting skills by participating in a team fundraising event called a Hit-a-Thon. The current PHS squad returns most of the players from last year’s 10-win team.

Brian Edwards is starting his first season as coach of the Pawhuska fastpitch squad, which was scheduled to open the regular season at Newkirk on Monday. The Lady Huskies were to play their first home game Tuesday versus the visiting Dewey Lady Doggers. Later this week, PHS is participating in the Cushing Softball Tournament. On Friday at the tourney, the Lady Huskies are to face Newkirk at 6:45 p.m.

Next week’s slate shows Pawhuska at Caney Valley for a 4:30 p.m. matchup Monday and Tonkawa coming to town for a Tuesday home game which was also to start at 4:30. Thursday, Aug. 20, is the first day of classes for Pawhuska schools and also the day the Lady Huskies are to begin playing in the Barnsdall Softball Tournament. A one-day festival at Kellyville is set for Friday, with the Barnsdall Tourney to conclude on Saturday.
