Lady Huskies win one in tourney
DEWEY — In between a character-building overmatch against the Tulsa Webster Warriors and a competitive final game on Saturday, the Pawhuska Lady Huskies were pitted against the Nowata High School junior varsity in last Thursday’s consolation round at the Dewey Bulldoggers Basketball Tournament.
On Tuesday night, Jan. 27, the PHS hoops squads were scheduled to play in the new gymnasium at Nowata. This time, the Lady Huskies would be facing Nowata girls’ varsity unit. Earlier this season at the Sperry Tournament, the Lady Ironmen throttled the Pawhuska girls, 48-10. In that contest, several Lady Huskie starters were sidelined with injuries.
Nowata’s girls were to bring a season mark of 5-10 into the Tuesday showdown while PHS would be entering at 6-11. In the boys’ game, the host Ironmen were 7-7 and the Huskies came in 5-12.
During this Friday night’s PHS home games against Hominy, five new inductees into the Pawhuska Basketball Hall of Fame are to be introduced to the audience at Oren Terrill Field House. The Lady Huskies and Lady Bucks tip off at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ game starts around 8.
District pairings for the Oklahoma Class 3A high school basketball playoffs will be announced next Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5. Last year, the Pawhuska squads were sent to Adair for rugged matchups against the host Warriors. (The Adair girls finished second to Alva in the state tournament.)
In Saturday’s fifth-place game at Dewey, the Lady Huskies lost by four points to a group of Tulsa-area home schoolers who took the court as the Green Country Defenders.
