Special hoops scrimmages part of Athletes 4 Athletes fundraiser

Pawhuska High School basketball fans got a special preview of this year’s Lady Huskies’ squad Saturday at Oren Terrill Field House.

In their first inter-squad workouts of the season, the PHS girls scrimmaged against visiting teams from Fairfax and Tulsa as part of Athletes 4 Athletes, an annual fundraiser which benefits the Pawhuska Special Olympics program.

Lady Huskie head coach Austin Minshall has been a driving force behind the Athletes 4 Athletes event, which also featured 5K and fun runs with start and finish lines on the high parking lot.

Participating in Saturday’s hoops sessions were the Woodland High School Lady Cougars and the highly-regarded Lady Cardinals of Tulsa East Central.

The PHS boys and girls basketball teams will launch the 2014-15 regular season Dec. 2 at Perry, with road contests also scheduled for Friday night, Dec. 5, at Barnsdall. Following appearances in the week-long Sperry Tournament (Dec. 8-13), the high school squads are to open their home seasons Tuesday, Dec. 16, versus Dewey.

Pawhuska elementary hoops action got underway last week and the local junior high teams started Tuesday. Next week, the junior high Huskies and Lady Huskies will host tournaments from Monday through Friday.
