Osage steer roping season finale held

Proving again that the competitive bar is set pretty high at the Osage Steer Roping Club, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings leader Chet Herren only took third place this season — even after strong showings on both days of the recent OSRC Finals.

During the 2014 season wrap-up event Sept. 19-20 at Bar K Arena, Herren posted Friday’s best time of 11.1 seconds and also had the fastest time (12.8 seconds) from the three rounds on Saturday. Herren’s two-day point total of 43 gave him 157 for the year, leaving him 4 1/2 points behind Cody Garnett, who finished as runner-up to the OSRC’s new A Division champion, Joe O’Rourke.

Herren won rounds two, three and five, while Garnett took the fourth go and placed second to O’Rourke in the sixth. Winner of the opening go was another Pawhuskan, Joey Bills. Average winner in the A Division finals was Ralph Williams of Skiatook, whose cumulative time of 75 seconds for the six Finals rounds edged Herren’s second-fastest total by more than a second, with Dee Kyler of Pawhuska taking third.

Matt Garrett of Barnsdall captured the OSRC B Division championship and Kenny Steidley of Claremore took the C Division title. Finals winners of the average competitions were Colt Williams of Owasso in the B Division and, for the C Division, Ed Harris of Pawhuska.

The year-end and season-average winners from all three roping divisions were awarded Mike Heisler-custom saddles. Herren received a commemorative rifle as the club’s High Point Memorial Winner. Nick Carter of Wynona was presented with the OSRC buckle for being 2014 Rookie-of-the-Year.

Horse-of-the-Year for the A Divison was Shorty, owned by Brad Mohon of Claremore. Ada roper Shad Beebe’s Stilley was top horse in B Division and Kenny Steidley’s Jack took the C Division honors. Lower-place awards included bits, cutouts, hat racks, headstalls and stirrups.

Osage Steer Roping Club officers for 2015 will be Ryan Lenz of Guthrie, president, and Kenny Steidley as the vice president. Directors are Brad Prather and Ralph Williams of Skiatook, Dee Kyler and Dale Christenson of Pawhuska, Tommy Johnson of Quinlan, Kenny Shores of Springer, Brad Prater of Wynona and Dee Friend of Bartlesville.
