Lady Huskie softball season opens Friday with scrimmage

A home scrimmage will get the Pawhuska High School fast-pitch softball season off and running on Friday.

And, make no mistake about it — this year’s PHS team is bound to be running.

Olivia Chronister launches her third campaign as PHS softball coach by sending a relatively young Lady Huskie squad to the field. But the 2014 Pawhuska girls are going to be blessed with outstanding speed throughout the order.

Quite a few returning starters are expected to be in this year’s Lady Huskie lineup. There also will be at least one third-year starter — junior shortstop Keylee Kirk.

The opponent for Friday’s home scrimmage will be Cleveland and the starting time is slated for 10 a.m. And, when the first pitch is thrown, the Lady Huskies’ junior high squad is to already be an hour into its scrimmage at Cleveland.

A second PHS scrimmage (versus the Lady Bulldogs of Lincoln Christian) is slated at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4. Another pre-season tune-up planned for 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 when Osage County rival Hominy will be making a local visit. The Lady Huskie junior high squad is to scrimmage at Hominy at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Earlier this summer, repairs were needed at the Lady Huskie home field following the removal of an inactive gas well (or maybe it was slightly active) from beneath an area in shallow right field. Although previous attempts had been made to plug the well, a smell of gas had continued to be detected — requiring that more drastic operations be undertaken by workers contracted through the Osage Nation Minerals Council and Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The softball regular season will get underway for PHS on Monday, Aug. 11, with a three-team event at Newkirk involving the Lady Huskies, the host Lady Tigers and the Pawnee Lady Black Bears. Games for the Pawhuska girls are set at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

PHS is scheduled to take part in the Cushing Softball Tournament Aug. 14-16. A three-team event will send the Lady Huskies and Alva Lady Goldbugs to Blackwell on Monday, Aug. 18. Pawhuska’s games are set at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

On the following day (Tuesday, Aug. 19), the Lady Huskies are slated for a 4:30 p.m. contest at Ramona with the Caney Valley Trojanettes. Pawhuska’s junior high girls are to play a 5 p.m. home game versus Newkirk on that Tuesday (8/19). While there is uncertainty about whether PHS will be involved in a late-August softball tourney at Copan, it is nearly certain that Pawhuska is to host a junior high tournament on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Pawhuska’s junior high girls will meet Cleveland in a 5 p.m. home game on Monday, Aug. 25. The Lady Huskie varsity squad is to then go back on the road for a three-way at Perry on Tuesday, Aug. 26. PHS matchups are set at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the host Maroons and team No. 3, Chisholm.

To wrap up August, the Lady Huskies travel to Barnsdall for a 4 p.m. game with the Lady Panthers on Thursday, Aug. 28. (On that same day at 5 p.m., the junior high girls will be playing at Blackwell.) The next day, Friday (Aug. 29), Pawhuska’s high school squad heads to Dewey for a 4:30 showdown while the junior high team hosts Dewey in a 5 p.m. contest.

Regular-season games scheduled over the first three weeks of September lead up to District-level events, Sept. 25-27 at a site to be determined.

Class 3A remains the assigned designation for Pawhuska in girls’ high school softball competition.
