Pawhuska jockey hopes to set mark for Quarter Horse race wins

OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park jockey G.R. Carter Jr. is looking to make more horse racing history during the 2014 American Quarter Horse and Mixed-Breed season that kicks off Friday night.

Carter will start the meet needing 56 race wins to become the all-time leader for Quarter Horse riding victories. He already holds the lead in all-time career earnings at $63.8 million, which is over $17 million more than any other jockey in Quarter Horse racing history.

The Pawhuska native said he would like nothing better than to break the wins record in Oklahoma City, where he now resides. Alvin “Bubba” Brosette, a A friend of Carter’s, currently holds the Quarter Horse race victory standard of 3,631.

In 2013, Carter recorded 55 race wins in the Remington Park season. But, as the track’s all-time winningest rider, he has chalked up 90 season triumphs three times. Nationwide, Carter has won more than 100 Quarter Horse races every year since 1988.

Carter became Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leader for jockey money earnings jockey on June 1, 2008, when he surpassed the previous record of $41,405,207 in mount earnings. He has continued to add to the record, with current earnings topping $63 million.

Last year on July 6, Carter became the jockey with the most mounts in AQHA racing history after piloting his 22,294th horse down the straightaway at Ruidoso Downs Race Track. He had 22,628 mounts aboard American Quarter Horses at the end of 2013.

Carter, 46, received the 2013 Sam Thompson Memorial Jockey Award. He has been named AQHA World Champion Jockey a record 10 times, in 1993, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012.

As a Pawhuska High School student, Carter also won a state gymnastics title (with the Phillips 66 team in Bartlesville) and a state wrestling championship.
