Huskies to host Carman Classic this weekend

Following back-to-back barn burners in home duals, the Pawhuska High School Huskies could be a force to be reckoned with this weekend when they host the Carman Classic wrestling tournament.

Teams from around northeastern Oklahoma are expected to participate in the annual event, which starts at noon Friday in Oren Terrill Field House. Championship semifinals will be held around 6 p.m. Friday. Consolation matches on Saturday afternoon lead up to championship and consolation finals action that evening.

Coach Wade Rogers’ PHS squad nearly qualified to the Class 3A Dual State Tournament last Thursday when the Huskies battled visiting Tonkawa down to the wire before falling to the Buccaneers, 36-33.

Pawhuska got victories via first-period falls versus the Bucs from its two returning state qualifiers — Taylor Priest at 126 pounds and Zalin Edwards, a 170-pounder who bumped up to 182 for his Thursday bout.

A year ago, Priest won his second consecutive Carman Classic title, while Edwards captured his first.

Levi Youngwolfe, a PHS freshman, earned an impressive 5-2 decision against Tonkawa 113-pound foe Anthony Jauregui, who was a fourth-place finisher in last year’s Class 3A state tourney. The match remained 0-0 until midway through the third period when Youngwolfe scored on a reversal and near-fall.

Another ninth-grader for the Huskies — Brycen Swan — barely lost a 7-5 nod to his 120-pound Bucanneer foe, defending state champion Owen Simpson. PHS winners by forfeit against Tonkawa included freshman Daniel Nightengale at 106 pounds, 170-pound sophomore Matthew Taft and senior Kendall Oller in the 195-pound slot.

The Huskies led 15-3 in the match following Priest’s pin, but the Bucs reeled off five straight victories to take 27-15 advantage. Included in that string were 9-6 and 3-1 decisions. After a forfeit, Edwards’ pin in the last second of the opening period tied the team scoring at 27 and then was re-tied at 33 with only the under-285 pound highweight bout remaining.

Two nights before the Tonkawa match, Pawhuska had claimed its fourth straight district 3A-8 dual by a 45-25 score over the Pawnee Black Bears. Individual results from that road match will be printed later, along with those from Tuesday night’s dual between the Huskies and homestanding Sperry Pirates.

Earlier district dual wins for PHS came at Barnsdall, 36-33, and at home versus Newkirk, 42-36. In the latest Class 3A dual rankings, the Huskies are No. 11. Also, Tonkawa is No. 6, Newkirk holds the No. 7 spot and Sperry came in at No. 14.

Next Tuesday night, Pawhuska will travel to Perry to take on the No. 1-ranked Maroons, 3A’s defending team champion in the tourney and dual state.

Pawhuska Junior High School wrestlers will also be competing in this weekend’s Carman Classic.
