Howerton elected to Osage County Commission

Mike Erwin | Pawhuska
Jerry Howerton

In Osage County's special general election for District 1 County Commissioner, longtime county employee Jerry Howerton of Pawhuska defeated Will Cubbage of Bowring.

Howerton, who had been serving as interim commissioner, will complete the final 20 months of the unexpired term of his former boss, Bob Jackson, who retired in July.

Democrat Howerton received nearly 60 percent of 1,266 votes cast.

Both candidates were making their initial bids for office. Cubbage, the county's former extension educator, had won a Republican primary in February. Howerton has been a county employee for more than 32 years.

Jackson had been county commissioner for the past six years in District 1, which covers most of the northern half of the state's largest (geographic) county.

In another of Osage County's Tuesday races, Betty Fowler was elected Barnsall City Council member for Ward 2.

Fowler received 109 votes to defeat former mayor J.D Cole, whose 66 votes represented less than 38 percent of the total.
