Dates for distributing free schools have been announced. Pre-assembled supplies for pre-K through 12 will be available for pickup from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 3-4 at the north entrance of the Methodist Church’s Family Life Center, 621 Leahy.

Regardless of income, all Pawhuska students qualify. Initiated 13 years ago, this citywide mission project is sponsored by the missions committee of the Pawhuska First United Methodist Church.

Co-chairperson Sherry Williams said, “Since its inception, the program has grown to include the support of our sister churches, businesses, civic clubs, banks and numerous individuals.

As a Methodist, I have been involved with this much-needed mission since its inception, helping with the team assembling of supplies by grade. This year, however, I discovered the true magnitude of this labor of love and the “behind the scenes preparation” that makes it possible.

Previously, Williams and co-chairperson Linda Boone have personally overseen the accumulation of the hundreds of items needed for each grade’s supply list. They made countless trips to area stores and oversaw the accumulation of donations from the Pawhuska community.

When I volunteered the use of my 6’x10’ trailer this week, Williams asked me if I thought the trailer could hold the equivalent of five SUV loads of school supplies. It was then that I realized the enormity of their dedication and the number of trips she and Boone (and most likely others) had made to pick up notebooks, reams of paper, pens, pencils and other required supplies. This year I was privileged to get “hands-on” experience in driving, selecting, loading, unloading and sorting the massive collection. This certainly provided all of us a healthy dose of exercise!
