Mike Tolson was elected president of the Pawhuska Board of Education in a special meeting Monday afternoon.

Tolson, an attorney with a private practice in Tulsa, is starting the second year of a five-year term on the board. The Pawhuska native was elected in 2016.

Danny Ferguson was chosen to take Tolson’s place as the board’s vice president. Members selected Patricia Counts to remain as the board’s clerk.

The board reorganization resulted from the recent election defeat of school board president Jeff Bute.

Thomas Boone Jr. was administered the oath of office prior to taking a seat on the board. After previously serving a five-year term in board seat 5 from 2011-15, Boone was elected to board seat No. 2 on Feb. 14. In districtwide voting, Boone defeated the first-term incumbent by approximately 100 votes out of nearly 700 that were cast.

Ferguson was appointed to the school board last year. Counts, who defeated Boone in the 2015 election, holds seat 5. The fifth Pawhuska school board member is Justin Sellers.
