Week of March 17-23

I hope everyone is well-rested after losing an hour of sleep Sunday. It is officially the spring season, as students across Oklahoma are enjoying spring break this week. Students will start back to school on Monday, March 22.

The Barnsdall Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting and discussed several items on the agenda. The Chamber reported many Bigheart Day updates, as the planning committee is getting closer to finalizing its preparations for the event. Over $4,000 has been secured for the fireworks display and $9,000 secured from vendors. The Chamber is designing metal signs to display at the intersections around town to publicize the event. The trophies for the competitions have been ordered, and the parade wagons for the class reunion groups have been reserved.

The Chamber also discussed the Easter Egg hunt. There will be 1,000 eggs filled with candy and prize money to be divided among three age groups. The Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at the high school football field.

Guest speaker Shawn Hamm, CFO for Nucera Solutions LLC, spoke to the chamber members about expanding the Barnsdall wax plant. He reported the plan would include hiring a new marketing director to assist in the further expansion and the expected growth in sales.

Also discussed at the Chamber was creating historical signs to be placed around town. The signs will be installed at different locations around Barnsdall, with property owners' permission. The next Chamber of Commerce meeting will be at noon Tuesday, April 13.

This week marks the third week of the month, and Barnsdall food pantries will be distributing food to anyone in need. The Lighthouse Family Worship Center (LFWC) will be having a mobile pantry from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 17. The Free Will Baptist Shirley Cook Memorial Food Bank will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 20.

The Barnsdall Citizens Inc.(BCI) will be hosting a 50-Plus dinner and bingo on Thursday, March 18. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and is held at the Barnsdall Community Center.

The high school track team travels to Dewey for a meet on Tuesday, March 23. The track meet starts at 9:45 a.m.

The high school slow-pitch softball team is scheduled to play two games this week. The team will host Ketchum at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 22, and travel to Kellyville on Tuesday, March 23.
