Barnsdall Schools about to begin holiday break

Misty Farber

Week of Dec. 16-22

I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather we had last week. It was indeed a nice variation from the winter weather we usually get in December.

The Chamber of Commerce met last week and discussed several items on the agenda, including an update on the 2021 Bigheart Day committee meeting. The theme of the event will center around “Education” to recognize the 100th anniversary of Barnsdall’s first graduating class. The committee is planning several exciting events for the day, including live music, an alumni meeting to include various gifts, and possibly a carnival. The committee meets monthly to plan and organize this event for all to enjoy.

The Chamber also reported it had distributed the winter sports athletic schedules for basketball and wrestling, and the Chamber will distribute the spring sports schedules for softball, baseball, and track in early spring. Lastly, the Chamber noted its membership consists of 49 businesses and 19 individuals so far for the 2020-2021 year.

As a reminder, American Legion Post 227 is participating in a fundraiser selling tickets for the New 10 Gun Drawing. Ten tickets will be drawn for a chance to win 10 different guns. The drawing will take place at the Legion's Department of Oklahoma Midwinter Conference on Jan. 22. Tickets are $10 each, with $5 from each ticket staying with our local Barnsdall Post 227. Contact Claud Rosendale at 918-724-2240 or stop by B&B Lumber to purchase a ticket. The raffle tickets would be a great Christmas stocking stuffer while supporting our local post.

Barnsdall students will complete their first semester this week, as they begin their Christmas vacation on Friday, Dec. 18. Students will return to school for the second semester on Monday, Jan. 4. As a reminder, parents and guardians can monitor their child’s grades using the Wengage parent portal at

The junior high basketball program will play one opponent this week as they travel to Copan on Thursday, Dec. 17. The athletes will then take some time off and will play their next game on Jan. 4, when they host the Pawhuska Huskies. All junior high games start at 5 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The high school girls and boys Panthers basketball teams travel north to Pawhuska to play the Huskies and Lady Huskies on Friday, Dec. 18. The teams will play their next scheduled games on Jan. 5. All high school games start at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The Barnsdall high school and junior high wrestling teams will be participating in the Cleveland Tournament this weekend. The tournament begins at noon on Friday, Dec. 18, and concludes on Saturday. Good luck to all the wrestlers! The teams will host Tonkawa for their next dual on Jan. 5.

The Osage Nation is hosting another ACT/SAT Test Prep class for all Osage and Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) students while on Christmas Break. The course will be held virtually on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to register. Students will participate in a practice test, and learn about financial literacy and college preparation. If you are interested in attending, please register by calling Avis Ballad at 918-287-5300 or email Attendees will be eligible for door prizes.
