Pawhuska High School is planning an afternoon and evening of high school gridiron excitement for this Friday, Aug. 21. The event will be the annual Pioneer Woman Classic, organized by the Pawhuska Public Schools Athletic Department and supported by two corporate sponsors, The Pioneer Woman Mercantile of Pawhuska, and Eastbay, which is an athletic footwear, apparel and equipment company.

The scrimmage event will feature the homestanding Pawhuska Huskies, the Rejoice Christian High School Eagles, the Sperry High School Pirates, and the Holland Hall High School Dutch. All four teams were active a year ago in the state football playoffs. Pawhuska was 11-2 and made the third round of the Class A playoffs. Rejoice made it to the fourth round (semifinals) of the Class A playoffs, Sperry made the third round in Class 2A, and Holland Hall made the second round in Class 2A.

The admission charge for fans attending the Pioneer Woman Classic will be $5 per head. Fans are required to wear face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 if they are unable to socially distance. Those who think they may need a mask are requested to bring one with them.

Pawhuska Coach Matt Hennesy said he anticipates the Pioneer Woman Classic being very competitive. He explained that he patterned the Classic after Lincoln Christian’s “Night of Champions,” to bring together highly competitive high school football teams.

Hennesy said his team’s star senior quarterback, Bryce Drummond, may only see limited action Friday due to a bicep injury. Hennesy added, however, that he anticipates Drummond will be 100% ready to go by the time the Huskies open the regular season Aug. 28 on the road versus Perry.
