Phillip A. Fortune, 81, of Pawhuska, OK, passed away on August 8, 2020. At the time of his death he was a resident at Green Country Care Center in Tulsa. But he was a Pawhuska, OK resident for most of his life. He was born to Arthur P. Fortune and Floy Jessie (Stacy) Fortune, on May 14, 1939, in Pawhuska, OK.

He graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1958.

Phillip worked as a Pawhuska city mail carrier. After 29 years of service, he retired from the United States Postal Service in1992.

Phillip was an avid fan of Western Swing Music. Phillip enjoyed listening to Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys among many other bands. He not only enjoyed the Playboys, he knew them, and they knew him. They had been in his home. He was a life long collector, starting when he was 7 years old. He would ride the bus by himself to Tulsa to purchase each Bob Wills record as it became available. He collected records by most country artists and had met many of them. His record collection exceeded 80,000 records. He also collected many dozens of personally autographed pictures of music artists. He had his own program on local radio for several years. Many people remember watching Phillip being interviewed by Ralph Emery on Nashville Now. Because of his outstanding contribution, dedication, and support of the Western Swing Country Music industry, Phillip was honored with membership in the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in 1993.

Another interest of Phillip’s was local history. His knowledge was so vast that he was often sought out to provide historical information about Pawhuska and the surrounding area.

Phillip wrote credited articles about teen movie actress, Hayley Mills, which were regularly published in a national teen magazine. He was also credited with contributing to a published biography of Bella Lugosi.

Phillip is survived by family and friends who have wonderful memories of him. He always had a ready smile, a joke, and a handshake for those he encountered, whether they were old or new acquaintances.

The family has entrusted Kendrick McCartney Johnson Funeral Home with the arrangements. A graveside service is scheduled for Monday, August 24, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
