Beginning of school pushed back a week

Week of Aug. 19-25

Barnsdall Public Schools has announced it has changed its first day of school to Monday, Aug. 24. Please refer to the Barnsdall Public Schools website for updates to the school calendar.

The Barnsdall Chamber of Commerce met last week and discussed several items on its agenda, as well as the planning of two community events. The Halloween and Christmas events are upon us and concerns regarding the novel coronavirus were discussed. If the Halloween event is held, the Chamber will need donations of candy, hot dog buns, condiments, cakes and cookies. The Christmas event has most of the financial commitments for the giveaways and may need to look at alternative plans to ensure the large crowd is safe.

The Chamber also discussed the possibility of adding names to the signage outside of Barnsdall, with Coach Joe Gilbert and Admiral Tom Hall as two names recommended. The Chamber also had a guest speaker, Kevin Chesnut, the director of Manufacturing of the Baker Hughes plant, who provided information about SK Capital acquiring the plant. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The Chamber also discussed the high school sports pocket athletic schedules, and there is still a need for sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring and paying for the publishing of the schedules, please contact Claud Rosendale. The next Chamber of Commerce meeting will be next month on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at noon.

The Barnsdall High School softball team is hosting the annual Barnsdall Softball Tournament this week at Wyrick Field. The tournament starts Thursday, Aug. 20 and concludes with the championship game on Saturday, Aug 22. The team will then travel to Sperry on Monday, Aug. 24 and Kellyville on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Both games will begin at 5 p.m.

The Barnsdall High School football team will begin its season this week, as it travels to Regent Prep for a scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 21. The scrimmage begins at 6 p.m.

This week marks the third week of the month, and the Barnsdall food pantries will be handing out food to anyone in need. The Lighthouse Family Worship Center (LFWC) will be having a mobile pantry, Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the Free Will Baptist Shirley Memorial Food Bank will be open on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
