NHS blood drive collects 31 units
BARNSDALL — Much support was shown at this year’s blood drive and the National Honor Society met its goal of 30 units. NHS collected 31 units of blood at last week’s drive as the last donor walked in at 2:35 p.m.
It was very close and our community stepped up and rushed to the school once they found out there were only a few donors needed to meet the goal. NHS will now receive $310 to use for its chapter this school year. In addition to donating blood, every donor who participated at the drive was entered into a drawing for Tulsa Drillers tickets and a free lunch at Sweet Scriptures.
Congratulations to Claud Rosendale, who won four tickets to the Tulsa Drillers game, and Fonda Tilley, who won a free lunch at Sweet Scriptures. Thank you to Sweet Scriptures and the Tulsa Drillers for donating the door prizes. Your generosity and school support are greatly appreciated. We would also like to send a special thank you to Jane Javine for baking homemade cookies for the blood drive. The cookies were a big hit and very much appreciated.
School has officially started this week as Barnsdall Public Schools welcomed 397 students back to school on Monday. Barnsdall has also welcomed several new teachers and support staff members for the upcoming school year and we would like to welcome them to our school.
The math department has all new teachers this year, with Jackson Due teaching upper elementary math, Seth Juby teaching junior high math and Marie David teaching high school math. Sharron Herring will be teaching junior high English and a reading elective. Jace Goodwin will be teaching an Introduction to Agriculture course for students in grades 8-12. This course will be the first class to start the new agricultural education program here at Barnsdall and he will also be the advisor for the new FFA chapter.
We also would like to welcome two new elementary paraprofessionals, Fallon Parks and Tiffany Kelley. The district has hired Brad Marshall, who will be taking care of the maintenance for the district, and Kandea Wilson, who will be the new high school custodian. Kandea is also helping assist with high school softball. Please welcome these new additions to our school staff this year. We are glad they are here and wish them all the best.
Meet the Panthers Night is Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower high school gym. This night will consist of meeting all the elementary and high school fall sports players for softball, football and cheerleading. Come out and meet the Barnsdall Panthers!
Grand Lake Mental Health is offering a Coping Skills and Development community group every Tuesday at 5 p.m. at its downtown office in Barnsdall for anyone who may be in need of some extra support. This group is offered at no cost and no appointment is necessary. For questions, call the Grand Lake office at 918-847-3527.
The high school will be administering the ACT on Oct. 1 during the school day. The ACT is an entrance exam that is required as part of the admissions process to enroll in most post-secondary education institutions. Any junior or senior who is interested in taking the ACT must sign up with Farber before Aug. 20. The cost of the test is $45.50. Make checks payable to Barnsdall High School.
