Lady Huskies slip on muddy home field

The Pawhuska Lady Huskies fast-pitch softball team lost 11-0 to Pawnee in a rainy, muddy home-field encounter Monday.

The matchup started with baserunning miscues on both sides. Pawhuska pulled off a double play on a strikeout to end the top half of the first inning when a Pawnee hitter started for first base after the Lady Huskies’ catcher failed to hang on. The throw had the effect of doubling up a Pawnee runner who failed to get back to the bag in time.

In the bottom of the initial frame, Pawhuska got one runner caught stealing. Another was out in a rundown between first and second. The rain continued off and on, but the Lady Huskies were unable to make offensive headway against Pawnee in the innings that followed.

PHS is off to an 0-3 start, with players who show enthusiasm but are still learning to play together. They lost their initial game 8-7 to Caney Valley and their second one 6-2 to Ponca City. The Lady Huskies are scheduled to visit Barnsdall next Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Coach Tara Malaske’s Lady Huskies also got a workout last Saturday evening at the hands of PHS alumni. The alums won, 13-5, but there was talk of considerable soreness afterward on the part of some of the old-timers, who had not played much ball lately.
