The Oklahoma Conference on Tourism awarded the Pawhuska Chamber of Commerce Oklahoma’s highest honor for their annual National Indian Taco Championship (NITC). The 2016 Merit Award (for) Outstanding Event was announced during the May 17th RedBud Awards Gala which was held in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma History Center. Accepting the award on behalf of Pawhuska’s NTCH committee was Chamber Director Joni Nash
Now entering its 12th year, this Indian Taco championship competition draws competitors and visitors from across the state. “Mark your calendars now for our October 1st event,” said Nash. “I would like to extend a special thank you to our outstanding committee for putting in countless hours to make such a successful event!”
The National Indian Taco Championship was established twelve years ago by the Pawhuska Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, the NITC committee expanded with sponsorship from the Osage Nation Tourism Department. The contest has two categories for amateur and professional cooks. Category 1 is the traditional or classic taco. Category 2 features dessert Indian tacos. Prizes range from $500 to $1,500. For a nominal fee, visitors get the chance to judge and sample the various entries. The all-day event also features a variety of contests, music, entertainment and vendors.
