College coaches to lead basketball camps
Registration deadline is June 6 for the upcoming summer basketball camps being sponsored by Pawhuska Youth Sports.
Two elementary-level camps will be conducted at Pawhuska High School on consecutive Saturdays — June 11 (for a girls’ camp) and June 18, for the boys’ camp. Cost is $50 per child. Camp participants should have been in grades two through six during the soon-to-be-concluded school term.
Nationally recognized college coach Jim Rowland is in charge of the June 11 camp for girls. Rowland, a Pawhuska native, is the head coach of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M’s Lady Norse basketball squad.
One week later, on Saturday, June 18, a camp for boys will be conducted by Justin Barkley, head coach of the Rogers State College Hillcats.
Both camps are to begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. In addition to receiving professional instruction on basketball fundamentals, campers get lunch and a camp T-shirt. Players from the PHS Huskie/Lady Huskie basketball teams will be assisting with the camps, as will other collegiate coaches and players.
On the last day to register for the camps — Monday, June 6 — representatives of the local youth sports organization will hold a final sign-up session from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the Pawhuska Community Center. Several previous sign-ups were offered last week and another was held Tuesday.
