Caney, Kan., isn’t top of mind for those looking for something to do. Its population hovers around 2,000 and activities are limited.

But an enduring part is the Caney Golf Club. Founded the year the stock market crashed, it has endured challenges such as a calamity that killed all the greens on the nine-hole course. The greens are restored and the club is eager to show them off with a special promotion.

Sunday, the CGC will offer free golf all day and cookout beginning at 1 p.m. An Open House will highlight membership benefits and discounts. Located at 1567 County Road 2000, part of its appeal are low fees, no tee times and friendly atmosphere. Golfers of all skill levels are welcome.

Jake Shaffer, his wife Blayne and their two children moved to Caney three years ago. They became members as something they could do together while meeting new people. They’re glad they did.

“I immediately found a new group of friends through the men’s league, Friday night scrambles and weekend play,” said Jake. “With the club’s smaller size, it didn’t take long to get to know everyone and for them to get to know us.”

Blayne also found a home at the CGC. “The Monday night ladies league is all about friendship and ‘me’ time, plus I am outside and moving,” she said. “Swinging a club and hitting a ball is a great stress reliever after work.”
