WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday announced more than $97 million in affordable housing grants will be distributed to 38 tribes in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma tribes were among 587 Native American tribes in 35 states that are receiving more than $660 million through the Indian Housing Block Grant that is distributed annually to benefit low-income families living on reservations or in other American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

The grants, which are based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units under management by the tribe or designated entity, include about: $30 million for the Cherokee Nation, $15.9 million for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, $12.1 million for the Chickasaw Nation and $11.6 million for the Choctaw Nation.
