Sunday duck hunt on Kaw Lake fatal
Emergency crews resumed their search Tuesday for an Arkansas man who has been missing since his boat capsized Sunday on Kaw Lake.
The body of the man’s duck-hunting companion was recovered from the lake’s icy waters early Monday. Authorities identified the deceased as 22-year-old Chase R. Morland of Van Buren, Ark.
Kay County officials contacted the Oklahoma Highway Patrol around 9 p.m. Sunday upon learning that the two men were believed to be missing. The boat was found shortly after midnight, but searchers had not been able to locate the hunters before suspending their efforts at about 2 a.m. Morland’s body was discovered when the search continued at 6:30 a.m.
OHP Troopers said personal flotation devices were not being used by the hunters. Late in the afternoon, fading light and the weather caused suspension of attempts to find the second man — Craig M. Strickland, 29, of Springdale, Ark.
According to postings on social media, Strickland is the lead singer of Backroad Anthem, a well-established area band that has opened for several major headliners. The group had been scheduled for a Monday performance in Oklahoma City.
