OCHD announces new regional director

Osage County Health Department last week announced the appointment of new Regional Director Larry Bergner. Bergner began his new role on May 4 and the health department staff is eager to introduce him to the community.

Bergner has 23 years of experience in public health, 19 of those years with Oklahoma State Department of Health as a Public Health Specialist. He has supervised Public Health Specialists in 17 counties in the Northeast Quadrant of Oklahoma since 2002 and has a Bachelor of Science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a master’s in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. In addition to Osage County, Bergner will be the director for Rogers, Washington and Nowata counties.

Bergner’s achievements include being a 2004 fellow of the Oklahoma Public Health Institute, 2008 fellow of the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute, the 2005 Oklahoma Society of Environmental Health Professionals Sanitarian of the Year Tim Green Award and the 2007 Oklahoma Society of Environmental Health Professionals Hardy Watson Award.

He and his wife Cindy have been married for 21 years, with three daughters, Hannah (18), Hayley (16), and Hope (12), and one son, Hunter (5). He has coached little league girls basketball, loves to read, fish, boat, and watch all sports. Mr. Bergner also enjoys teaching Bible class and being very active at the Church of Christ in Vinita.

The role of Regional Director is to oversee health department programs and ensure compliance with state and federal laws. Mr. Bergner plans to remain directly involved in community activities in his region by creating and sustaining local coalition partnerships. Another short term goal is to provide the health department employees opportunities to enhance our programs. He wishes to create a community culture of healthy choices by providing education in nutrition, exercise, and health benefits of being drug and tobacco free.
