Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative has received a $21 million federal loan guarantee that will help improve its delivery of electric power in rural areas.

U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the loan guarantee as part of $518 million in investments to rural electric cooperatives from 15 states.

The funding is being provided by the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service, which also administers programs that help bring broadband, safe drinking water and improved wastewater treatment facilities for rural communities, a spokesperson for the USDA said.

Verdigris Valley officials said the loan would be used for the construction or repair of more than 230 miles of the cooperative’s lines, as well as for making other improvements to the VVEC system.

VVEC provides electric service to more than 35,000 meters in five Oklahoma counties — Osage, Nowata, Rogers, Tulsa and Washington.
