Osage County Historical Society Museum officially re-opens; annual meeting Friday

Seventeen months after fire threatened to destroy the Osage County Historical Society Museum, this gem of the Osage officially opened to the public on Saturday, May 31. In addition to previewing the myriad of exhibits depicting the area’s rich past, visitors had an opportunity to pose for a whimsical photo op, courtesy of Kailsey Cree, granddaughter of Museum Director Barbara Pease. As they departed, children were provided a helium-filled balloon and sweet treats.

Tours guides included Exhibit Designer Rhonda Khonle who wore her Osage traditional dress. Larry Taylor represented an old-fashioned cowboy with chaps, boots and a cowboy hat.

Hostess OCHS Director Patty Gambill was very happy with the turnout, particularly the number of positive responses from visitors. Gambill is heading up a special book sale that will run through June. Paperbacks start at 10 cents. The $3 section contains fiction, nonfiction, DIY and more.

“People seemed to be very pleased with the Museum. In reviewing some of the comments noted on the Museum’s guest register, one out-of-town visitor said ‘This Museum is awesome,’” said Pease. “One of the first families said they were on their way to Woolaroc and noticed our grand opening on the Museum’s website. They were very glad they stopped.”

Pease also noted how thrilled the children were to be able to have their photo taken.

The Osage County Historical Society will be hosting its annual meeting and dinner this Friday at the Velma Oakes Family Life Center, 120 Leahy. The fete kicks off at 6 p.m. and will feature a live and silent auction, brief business meeting and special music by the Honorable Judge John Kane. A limited number of tickets are still available from OCHS Directors, at the Museum or by calling 918-287-9119. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
