Osage County Partnership Board promotes ‘Through with Chew Week’

The Osage County Community Partnership Board has connected with two Osage County dental offices to promote oral cancer early detection and prevention to honor “Through With Chew Week,” Feb. 16-22, 2014.

During the month of February, two dental groups — Dr. Adam Bulleigh, DDS of Pawhuska Green Country Dental Arts, and Dr. Fox at Hominy’s Fairfax Dental Clinic — are offering free oral exams to spit tobacco users.

If you use smokeless tobacco and you have noticed any sores in your mouth that do not heal within two weeks, feel any bumps or soreness and/or see any gum discoloration, now is the time to act on behalf of your health.

Osage County Health professionals urge all who currently use tobacco to seriously consider setting a Quit Date. When you are ready to set that quit date, you are that much closer to giving up the nicotine habit and ready to live a healthier lifestyle. Nicotine, found in tobacco products, is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. The 1800quitnow helpline can be accessed with call-ins and online support. In fact, the helpline has helped move the needle of Oklahoma Tobacco users from 47th worst smoking/ tobacco use in the nation to 39th.

According to the National Institute of Health some key facts:

— The average age of first time users of smokeless tobacco is 10 years old.

— Holding an average size dip in your mouth for 30 minutes gives you as much nicotine as smoking 3 cigarettes. A two-can-a-week snuff dipper gets as much nicotine as a one and a 1/2 a pack a day smoker does.

— Smokeless tobacco users increase their risk of cancers of the oral cavity, throat, larynx, and esophagus when compared to people who do not use tobacco.

— Many businesses and communities across the globe are moving toward tobacco-free business environments in an effort to prevent negative health effects of commercial tobacco use.
