Santa arrives in Shidler for parade
SHIDLER —“Santa Claus Is Coming to Town Lighted Christmas Parade” is this northeast Oklahoma town’s main event on Dec. 13.
Participants are urged to register by the deadline of Tuesday, Dec. 9, according to Mollie Bivin of the Shidler Area Chamber of Commerce and The Bivin Garden. The Shidler Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event.
The evening’s festivities include music, “goody sacks” with fruit and candy for the children, hot chocolate, hot spiced apple cider and home-made cookies. Photos are available with Santa as he listens to children’s wish lists.
“The whole event is free of any cost for everyone,” Bivin said. “Our Christmas Parade is so much fun. Santa arrives on Shidler’s big Red Fire Engine and the kiddies become so excited. It is lots of fun to watch them actually see him for the first time.”
Bivin explained that the local Rural Volunteer Fire departments join the parade and have done so for several years. “We are so proud of the guys and what they do for the area with no salary. Plus, a lot of the operational expense comes out of their own pockets.
“This event gives the area residents the opportunity to publicly acknowledge all the fire fighters do for Northwest Osage County during the hazardous wildfire season. The public really responds to this.”
She said the event is always well attended in spite of the usual cold and windy weather conditions. “The warm drinks are really appreciated by those arriving at the Community Safe House, which is made available for the community event by the Pawhuska Housing Authority.”
Parade entrants assemble on 4th Street, the north side of City Hall, at 5 p.m., and the parade begins at 6 p.m. Prizes are awarded in all categories: 1st place, $50; 2nd place, $25; and 3rd place $15. The judges’ decisions are final.
Entrants must pre-register to qualify for prizes. Registration forms for the 5th annual lighted parade are available at several locations in town or can be obtained by calling 918-793-4171 or by e-mailing email@example.com.
