Happy birthday, Sally!

Local café owner, Sally Carroll, turned 98 on Oct. 22 and celebrated at Sally’s Café by giving out free birthday cake to patrons. Carroll has been at the same location since 1943, when owner George James asked her to work for him offering her a $2 per week raise to entice her away from her previous employer, Lazo’s. When James passed away in 1949, Sally — then a single mother of two — rented the building and began an aggressive saving plan. A year later in Jan. 1950, she purchased the building for $5,000, changed the name from Post Office Sandwich Shop to Sally’s Café and continued her legacy of humbly serving food to Pawhuskans from 614 Kihekah Ave. for the past 71 years.
