OCIC hosts teachers in math, sciences partnership program
Forty-eight math and science teachers recently participated in Project BUILD — an initiative of the Osage County Interlocal Cooperative — which offers summer training to third- through 12th-grade math and science teachers.
The project is made possible through a yearly Science, Technology, Engineering and Math grant. OCIC wrote and manages the grant funded by the Oklahoma Department of Education through the Title IIB Mathematics and Sciences Partnership Program. This is the sixth year that training has been available to teachers from 17 school districts.
Participating teachers, who attend professional development sessions to enhance classroom teaching and learning, represented Anderson Public School, Avant Public School, Barnsdall Public School, Bowring Public School, Caney Valley Public School, Cleveland Public School, Frontier Public School, Hominy Public School, Newkirk Public School, Osage Hills Public School, Pawhuska Public School, South Coffeyville Public School, Skiatook Public School, Wellston Public School, and Wynona Public School.
Project BUILD consists of a two-week summer training and three follow-up days spread throughout the school year. The emphasis is on life science, engineering and technology components, and algebraic reasoning. Multiple hands-on activities emphasize literacy in all aspects of math and science.
OCIC, along with partners — Northeastern State University, Tulsa Community College and Tulsa STEM Alliance — provide the content for the sessions.
Additional business partners — Fab Lab Tulsa, Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum, Williams Company, Wallace Engineering and Bama Inc. — hosted presentations and tours on field trips that teachers attended.
