Wynona students return from memorable trip to nation’s capitol

The students from Wynona who were privileged to get the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., would like to thank everyone for their support with fundraisers. Without the help of the community in purchasing the items the students sold, attending their baked potato dinner at the Elk’s Lodge and Wynona School, supplying items for their silent auction, and making cash donations, the students would not have had the opportunity to see the nation’s capitol.

The students were able to experience new things. They toured the Pentagon and the Capitol building. The took the “Old Town Trolley,” which traveled by 23 important sites in the Washington, D.C., area, such as the Jefferson Memorial, White House, Washington Monument, and many more.

Another exciting activity was touring the Arlington National Cemetery. They witnessed the “Changing of the Guard” and “Laying of the Wreath.”

The students also experienced riding the Metro System and learning to quickly enter and exit.

On the day the were to depart to come home, the group learned their flight had been cancelled, so they got to stay in Washington, D.C., an extra night. The next night, they landed in Dallas too late for their next flight, and the group of 19 were all on standby for the next flight out that night. Unfortunately, only five of them were able to get on that flight and the remaining 14 got to spend a night in Dallas. Sunday morning they were able to make it to Tulsa on two separate flights. Luckily, American Airlines paid for their rooms and food for the extra nights.

Organizers of the group said they have many memories from this spectacular trip and are thankful for this once in a lifetime experience for many of the children.
