Constantine’s ‘Imperfect Proposal’ a resounding success

Weeks of practice certainly paid off for the Constantine Players when they presented two hilarious performances of Lisa Perry’s “Imperfect Proposal” last weekend. Directed by Lori Loftis, the play is about an older couple (played by veteran thespian Garrett Hartness and newcomer Alma Hull) who eavesdrop as Ben (Jake Collier) attempts to propose to Katie (Jennifer Adair). Ben’s efforts are thwarted by a series of challenging circumstances, including challenging Ben’s manhood when Katie is harassed by football players Tre Harper, Vincent Santini and Fletcher Warmington. Rich socialite and protester are played by Penny Adair.

The scene opens in a city park which naturally attracts dog walkers. These were played by Nancysu Herron and Baire (her Sheltie Sheepdog) and Serena Jeffers and Taylor (a Boston Terrier rescue dog). Their walks and Ben’s attempt to propose were halted by a group of sign-waving protesters called PAPIP (People Against Pets in Parks). Led by Emily Boe, PAPIP vocally expressed their disdain about dog poop. She was joined by Jewel Santini, Leah Strahm, Haley Grooms and Emily Potts who had the dual role of a mime.

Joining Hull in making their acting debuts were Cyndi Kane who was the attractive girl seeking Ben’s attention and Jeff Phillippi, the educated ex-boyfriend of Katie (played by Jennifer Adair). Following the performance, the JC interviewed some of the actors, including 12-year old Tre Harper and 11-year old Leah Strahm.

Constantine has a number of exciting events on tap for June. The documentary “Playground of the Native Sun” will premiere on June 14, 21 & 28, at 3 p.m. At 7 p.m. on June 21st, “August Osage County” will be shown. This film is rated “R”.
