Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive slated May 10

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, benefitting the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and its 450 Partner Programs throughout eastern Oklahoma, is planned for May 10. Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the country, made possible by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association.

On May 10, everyone is encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable food items by their mailbox by 7 a.m. for their letter carrier to pick up. It will then be delivered to Christ’s Cupboard of Pawhuska to be sorted. All food collected in the Pawhuska area will stay in the community.

“Too many people in this country are still going hungry every day,” said NALC President Fredric Rolando. “As letter carriers, we see this firsthand in just about every community we serve. We aren’t the type of folks who simply move on to the next delivery and hope someone else will do something about it. Instead, for more than two decades now, our members have taken the lead in the effort to help solve this ongoing national problem.”

Within the Tulsa area last year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected 121,011 pounds of food. An additional 141,678 pounds of food were collected outside of Tulsa and distributed to Food Bank Partner Programs located throughout the 24-county service area. In total, the donated food provided nearly 219,000 meals for those struggling with hunger in eastern Oklahoma.

The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is the largest hunger-relief organization in eastern Oklahoma. The Food Bank distributes food through a network of 450 Partner Programs in 24 counties in eastern Oklahoma. These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, low-income after-school programs and senior citizen centers. Collectively, the Food Bank provides more than 275,000 meals each week.
