Around Town: Red Hatters meet at Queen’s home

I was privileged to host the Pawhuska Red Hat Society ladies for our first meeting of 2014. We are the Company of Wayward Saints (COWS). I am Queen Mother. My co-queens for the day were Sherry Williams, Keeper of the Coins (Treasurer), and Ann Leatherman, one of our newest recruits.

The Company of Wayward Saints received our official Red Hat Society Charter on May 13, 2009. We joined hundreds of women around the world to celebrate life and the concept of aging with humor, high spirits and fun. We are seniors in “recess.”

Since our inception, we have shared dozens of gatherings and memory-making outings. Locally, we have visited antique shops, the Grandview Mansion, the Prairie Dog, Osage County Historical Society Museum, and the remolding of the Pioneer Woman’s building. Our little group loves to take road trips. We have been to Bartlesville, Dewey, Claremore, Grove, Ponca City, Broken Arrow, Jenks, Sperry, Skiatook and Pryor with stops along the way. Two members volunteer to be co-hostesses (Queens for the Day) for our monthly meetings and decide what adventure awaits us.

We have two mascots. Erma is a RHS Goose that we named in honor of Erma Brombeck. Each of us added embellishments to make Erma unique. After realizing the acronym for the Company of Wayward Saints was COWS, our imaginations soared as we began transforming a donated cow windsock. We named the windsock ‘COW’ and members dressed her up with a red straw hat, fluffy red boa, and appropriate jewelry.

The only qualification to join the Red Hatters is a strong spirit and a positive outlook on the ‘Golden Years.’ Women over fifty are referred to as RED HATTERS. Our red hats are complimented with purple attire and sometimes outlandish bling. Ladies in waiting wear lavender outfits, pink hats and are referred to as PINK HATTERS. Gals under 30 are known as PINKETTES and wear an ivory hat and pink attire. They may also embellish their hat with pink.

The COWS meet the third Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. Our next meeting will be held Feb. 18. Co-Queens will be Jo Johnson and Barbara McVey. For more information, please feel free to contact me at 918-287-1553.
