Library sponsoring free book giveaway

The Pawhuska Public Library is sponsoring a free book giveaway Friday, August 30.

“We are excited to offer free books to children preschool through the sixth grade,” said Assistant Librarian Yvonne Rose. “Kids can choose a free book to read over the Labor Day weekend!”

Library Director Lu King added, “We have a lot of unique little books – many of which are paperbacks – that are included in the free giveaway.”

King said that most paperbacks are generally not sturdy enough to add to the Library’s checkout inventory but needed to find good homes with area children.

When asked if the Library would like to make this an annual event, King replied, “Depending on the success of Friday’s giveaway and future donations, we would like to make this an annual event.”

The Pawhuska Library has an ongoing quest to provide challenging and entertaining programs for area youth to introduce them to the wonderful world of reading. This summer the Library sponsored ‘Dig into Reading: What’s Beneath the Surface?’ Curricula consisted of nine hour-long sessions and included a magic show, dinosaurs, treasure hunting, caves, underground animals, cowboys, sodbusters, fraidy holes, and gardening. Each session was designed to enable children preschool through the fifth grade an opportunity to explore living with the earth, underground nature and treasurers. At the conclusion of the program, the children had an opportunity to beautify the Library grounds by planting iris bulbs.

Rose encourages parents or guardians to apply for a free library card for children and youth under eighteen.

“The process only takes a few minutes,” said Rose. “Applications are filled out and signed in the library. Documents needed are an adult’s driver’s license, and a proof of residence. Proof of residence may be mail, a check, or receipt.”

The Pawhuska Library is located at 1801 Lynn Avenue. The Library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 31, Sunday Sept. 1 and Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2.

New Library Hours

Effective Sept. 1, the Library will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and from 1 - 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Saturday hours will be 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The revised Thursday schedule is to allow in-house training for the Library staff which will allow the staff time to keep abreast of ongoing technology as well as planning future outreach programs for youth and adults. Rose said plans are already being formulated for next year’s Summer Reading Program.
