Season to Taste
It would be interesting to know how many variations of “the sausage ball” recipe exist. It also makes me wonder who came up with the original version before everyone began tweaking it to their liking. It seems there are a lot of recipes floating around out there others lay claim to simply because they added or deleted an ingredient. Heck, I know I do!
Of course, I try to give credit where credit is due before I go staking my claim, don’t ‘ya know! But seriously, I have no idea WHERE I came up with the following sausage ball recipe. I just know that when I fix ‘em…..well, Honey, everybody comes running and starts screaming for more!
Who Invented the Sausage Ball and Why?
1 pound Jimmy Dean sausage
2 cups Bisquick
2 cups of grated sharp cheddar cheese
a small amount of finely minced sweet onion
1 (15 ounce) jar Cheez Whiz
In a large bowl, mix the uncooked sausage, with all the other ingredients. YOU WILL NOT USE ALL OF THE CHEEZ WHIZ!
(Use approx. 12 to 13 ounces or nearly 3/4 of the jar. I don’t measure, I just scoop out most of it.) I then don a pair of disposable gloves and squish all the ingredients together with my hands.
Once everything is combined and you see no visible signs of the white powder of the Bisquick, pinch off walnut-sized pieces, roll into a ball and place on a parchment lined baking jelly roll pan.
Bake for 25-30 minutes at 325 degrees. (The last five minutes of baking, you can adjust your oven to 375)
The sausage balls will look nice and golden brown when they are done.
