PEO Chapter EM holds annual Bridge Fest
Pawhuska P.E.O. Chapter EM hosted its 11th annual Bridge Fest recently at the Velma Oaks Methodist Church Family Life Center. The five-game contract progressive tournament’s theme was “Share the Gift” and featured two levels, Seasoned and Beginners.
A gorgeous fruit platter, surrounded by assorted breakfast goodies kicked off the event. Daisies and adorable Lady Bugs dotted the spring-inspired buffet and dining tables that consisted of a colorful array of salads and delectable desserts.
An abundance of attractive door prizes enabled each player to be a winner. For the second consecutive year, top-point winner in the Seasoned-Category was Etta Love of Bartlesville. Garnering 4,580 points, Love received a $50 cash prize. Glenda Driskell, also of Bartlesville, came in second with 4,400 points and a $25 cash prize.
Dee DeMoss of Pawhuska took first place in Beginner’s Bridge, earning a $25 cash price. Gloria Waymire of Tulsa scored second place in Beginner’s Bridge and a $10 cash prize. Sherry Williams of Pawhuska held the winning ticket for the 50/50 pot. Linda Boone of Pawhuska won the raffle that consisted of a beautiful gift basket.
Janet Main of Tulsa endured the poorest hands but walked away with a huge gift basket. She scored a second time when she won the Deuce prize. Before the Bridge Fest commenced, PEO EM ‘Rules’ and Bridge Expert Dottie Allen explained, “The Deuce prize is a Bridge Fest tradition that involves a traveling balloon that is awarded to whoever wins a trick with a deuce. We also award a six-pack of Coke Cola to the player holding zero points.” Since Main held the roaming balloon at the end of the tournament, she ended up with an Oklahoma-shaped basket filled with assorted goodies. The Coke Cola special prize was forfeited, as no one scored zero points.
P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women and motivate one another to achieve their highest aspirations. P.E.O. provides women with scholarships, grants, awards, loans as well as stewardships for the P.E.O. owned Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. P.E.O. offers opportunities for women seeking to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada.
Pawhuska P.E.O. Chapter EM President Libby Strahan said, “Bridge Fest is our Chapter’s primary fund raiser. Since its origin eleven years ago, we have raised over $11,000 for P.E.O. projects. These monies continue to provide scholarships to local women, including Pawhuska High School seniors, for Continuing Education.” Strahan thanked Lindy Hudson for serving as Bridge Fest Chair. She acknowledged that the success of this annual event was due to the combined effort of all P.E.O. Chapter EM sisters.
