‘Bad Grandpa,’ ‘The Counselor’ start Friday in area theaters

• Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa — Eighty-six-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his 8 year-old grandson, Billy. Stars Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll. Rated R.

• The Counselor — A lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking. Stars Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz. Rated R.

• Escape Plan — When a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world’s most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside. Stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rated R.

• Carrie — A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore. Rated R.

• Captain Phillips — The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. Stars Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi. Rated PG13.

• Gravity in 3D & 2D — A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space. Stars Sandra Bullock, George Clooney.

• Insidious Chapter 2 — The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Rated PG13.

• Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 in 2D & 3D — Flint Lockwood now works at The Live Corp Company for his idol Chester V. But he’s forced to leave his post when he learns that his most infamous machine is still operational and is churning out menacing food-animal hybrids. Rated PG.

• The Smurfs 2 — The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer’s newest creation — creatures called the Naughties — into real Smurfs. Rated PG.

• Monsters University — A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University — when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends. Stars the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman. Rated G.

• Despicable Me 2 — Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a new super criminal. Rated PG.
