Pawhuska High School’s wrestling coach, Austin Legg, is thrilled that he’ll be taking seven wrestlers to Oklahoma City this coming weekend for the state tournament at the fairgrounds. That group of seven includes three members of a single family — the McCartneys.
Tristian McCartney, who finished second at 220 pounds in Class 3A east regional matches at Vinita, will be in the state tournament along with his sisters, Marion, who wrestles at 112 pounds, and Landon, who competes at 118 pounds.
“I’m not sure if there have been three siblings all at once wrestle in the state tournament, but that is a heck of an accomplishment for the McCartney family” Legg said.
Other Pawhuska qualifiers for state include Dylan Doyal, who placed fourth in regional competition at 285 pounds; Bryce Drummond, who was second at 195 pounds; Lesharo Wildcat, who was fourth at 182 pounds; and Jesse Carr, who was fifth at 170 pounds.
Ryck Quillen placed sixth at 113 pounds at regionals, but only the top five placers move on to the state tournament, Legg explained.
Legg voiced enthusiasm for the achievements of his wrestlers, and also thanked the local community for its support during the 2019-20 wrestling season.
“I am so proud of this group of kids,” Legg said. “They have worked very hard all season to get to this point. They exceeded their expectations and have punched their ticket to the big house. I also want to thank the wrestling community for coming out and supporting our kids this weekend. We appreciate you.”
