Pawhuska 59, Wesleyan Christian 32
Three members of the Pawhuska girls basketball team reached double figures on Nov. 28 to lift the Lady Huskies to a 59-32 victory over the Lady Mustangs of Wesleyan Christian School.
The Lady Huskies (1-0) jumped in front in the first quarter and never relinquished their lead. Coach Luke Broadbent kept the pressure on the Lady Mustangs by rotating five players in and out — much like a line change in hockey — throughout the game.
“When we press people full court we are going to give people problems,” Broadbent said. “Some night’s it doesn’t look great, but it creates problems for good teams.”
Pawhuska led 13-5 after the first quarter, and held a 26-13 advantage at half. The Lady Huskies outscored Wesleyan Christian 33-19 in the second half. Wesleyan Christian (2-1) turned in its best quarter of play in the fourth — scoring 12 points. Janelle Arnold scored three baskets and two free throws to lead the fourth quarter surge. Only one Lady Mustang reached double figures — Morgan Cloud finished with 10 points.
Pawhuska standout Star Sweeden lead all scorers with 11 points, while Kyliegh Riebel and Kaiti Moen each finished with 10.
Broadbent said the team missed a lot of uncontested layups, attributing the problem to first-game jitters.
“I think we need to finish a lot better. I think if we make about half the layups we missed tonight we end up winning the game by 40 instead of 25,” he said.
Pawnee girls 40, Pawhuska 14
The Lady Huskies couldn’t find the range against Pawnee’s zone defense Friday night. Pawhuska was scoreless in the first and fourth quarters. They scored 7 points in each of the second and third quarters.
Pawnee struggled at times too. The Lady Bears scored 10 points in the first and 11 in the second, and led 21-7 at halftime. The Lady Bears found the basket for 19 points in the third quarter, but didn’t score a point in the fourth.
Alyssa Reynolds led the Lady Huskies scoring with 8 points. Taelor Brown led Pawnee with 12 points.
