Let the family know you are thinking of them

Thursday, January 5, 2022, our beloved Ruby Diane Whicker left this world surrounded by family and sent off with great love. She was 73.

Diane was born on February 9, 1949, in Edna, Kansas, to Betty Jane (Batman) Palmer and Earl (Bill) Palmer. She grew up there getting into great innocent mischief with her sister, Joyce Irene Miller, and brother, Earl Lee Palmer. Together they made many wonderful memories.

Diane excelled in academics and especially enjoyed choir where she could share her beautiful singing voice and won several competitions.

Diane had two children Stacy and Brian - a girl and a boy, exactly what she wanted. She was fully devoted to her children, providing and sacrificing for their benefit and creating a home where love and laughter flourished.

Diane was an adored grandmother. Known as Grandma and GMo, Diane wholeheartedly entered her grandchildren’s worlds whether by frog hunting, super-agent sleuthing, master-mind world controlling, or hunting supply shopping. Jarron and Alexander were immensely blessed by her presence and love and felt fully seen and adored for exactly who they were.

She taught her family many virtues and life lessons and gave them a real schooling in the art of playing many card and domino games.

Her greatest joy came from her family, including nieces Patty Jo Smith, Carrie Miller, Angela Palmer Keath and Kristi Palmer Baker, their children and grandchildren, and cousins far and near. They supported each other through tragedies and celebrations and the day-to-day. They grew together in perfectly imperfect ways that deepened their connection and love.

Diane started her career at Phillips Petroleum Company in the mail room and worked her way up to management in seismic records. Diane also completed her Bachelors’ degree from Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Business Administration while working full-time. She developed many deep friendships and professional admiration throughout her career. Diane retired at age 55 and was able to spend her remaining years pursuing her passions.

Diane honed her sewing skills, self-teaching couture techniques and pattern making. She was an avid gardener and served in several officer positions for the Caney Garden Club. Diane spent time in Port Aransas and developed yet another family of close friends who wintered there together. Great fun and shenanigans ensued, and many memories were made between these close friends. Diane rounded out her time with visiting her children and grandchildren, performing laundry fairy services, connecting with friends, bird feeding, and dog loving.

Diane was predeceased by her father Earl (Bill) Palmer, stepfather Dale Batterton, and mother Betty Jane Batterton.

Diane is survived and missed by her loving daughter Stacy Bain, son-in-law, Doug Bain, son Brian Whicker and his fiancée Tina Boyd; grandsons Jarron Whicker and Alexander Bain; brother Lee Palmer and wife Paula Kahler Palmer and sister Joyce Miller; and her loving nieces and grand and great-grand nephews and nieces.

Ruby Diane was just that, a divine, beautiful, brilliant, gem.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in her honor on February 18th at 2:00 at the Sandstone Event Center, 101 N State Street, Caney, Kansas.

Please wear something with flowers or birds or brightly colored to honor her beautiful, loving, and joyous soul.
