Daniel Joe Simmons, 70, passed away at his Pawhuska residence on March 7.

Dan was born Jan. 27, 1946, in Ramona to Everett Ray and Zelma Florence (Poindexter) Simmons. He received his education in Ramona schools and graduated high school in 1964. He then attended Northeastern (Okla.) State College, where he majored in English.

After student teaching there, Simmons was hired to a full-time position at Bartlesville’s College High School. He received a Master’s degree from Central (Okla.) State University. Dan spent his entire 30-year teaching career in Bartlesville — retiring in 1998. In 2012, he was inducted into the Bartlesville Public School Foundation Hall of Fame.

He married Jean Ann Terrill in Pawhuska on Dec. 23, 1978. Survivors include: his wife of 37 years; a son, Terrill, and wife Gretchen Simmons and a precious little grandson, Terrill Gier Simmons, Jr., all of Pawhuska; sister Alice Watkins and husband James, of Muskogee; a sister-in-law, Susan Simmons, of Cecil, Ark., and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janet and John Main of Tulsa. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews.

Preceding Mr. Simmons in death were: his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oren and Helen (Gier) Terrill; three brothers — William Lee Simmons, Paul Simmons, Robert Ray Simmons; a brother-in-law, Bill Glasgow, and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Simmons.

As had been requested by the deceased, the body was cremated and there was no funeral service. McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Because of his love of teaching and the many students he inspired, a Dan Simmons Memorial Fund has been created to benefit the Language Arts Department at Bartlesville High School.
