FAIRFAX – Rural Wellness Fairfax, Inc., a healthcare investment company, on Friday announced its acquisition of Fairfax Community Hospital and its plan to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

“In these uncertain times, our citizens need healthcare more than ever. We are dedicated to saving this hospital for the community of Fairfax and Osage County. Preserving healthcare access in rural communities like Fairfax is critical,” said Dr. Elizabeth Pusey, founder and president of Rural Wellness Fairfax, Inc., said. “Our revival of this rural hospital keeps vital health care providers close to home, improves long-term medical outcomes and saves jobs that affect the livelihood of dozens of Fairfax residents and their families.”

Rural Wellness Fairfax, Inc. said it is investing $2.1 million in the purchase of the hospital and preserving approximately 50 jobs.

“Retaining and growing our medical staff is a top priority. We are working to identify and preserve critical physician, nursing and technologist roles in our hospital and to raise employees’ pay across the board,” Pusey said. “We have developed a COVID-19 response plan designed to maintain medical services for the communities we serve while protecting staff and the patients under the care of the hospital. Our healthcare experts are closely monitoring the Centers for Disease Control reports and local health officials regarding coronavirus developments and will continue to follow their guidance.”

In addition to Dr. Pusey’s leadership, First Physicians Capital Group, an Oklahoma City-based hospital management group, will help lead operations at Fairfax Community Hospital through financial, technology, and capital solutions.

“Dr. Pusey’s commitment and innovative approach to healthcare will positively impact the residents of Fairfax and its surrounding communities during this challenging time,” said Guy Adams, First Physicians Capital Group’s board chairman. “First Physicians Capital Group is here to support her vision and the citizens of Osage County.”

Dr. Pusey is a physician with over 30 years’ experience in both hospital-based and private practice settings. She currently has an active medical practice primarily focused on breast cancer detection in Orange County, California. Her family’s roots as immigrant Mexican farm workers in California, and her mother’s life of poverty in rural Illinois inspired her to serve in rural healthcare. She became aware about living conditions in rural Oklahoma and the impact of critical access hospital programs in the state through a colleague.

“As the pandemic continues to evolve quickly, our hospital staff and I stand by ready to serve and support the citizens of Fairfax and Osage County and ensure quality healthcare is accessible to all,” Pusey said.
