BARNSDALL — The Barnsdall High School class of 2022 will be offering a 5K run and a fun run Saturday morning, May 25, for the annual Big Heart Day celebration. Big Heart Day is Barnsdall’s Memorial Day weekend extravaganza.
There are a little over 30 students in the class and this will be a way for them to participate in their town’s signature festival and raise a little money, too.
Fonda Tilley, one of the class sponsors, said registration will be held at 8 a.m. on-site the morning of the running activity, in the Twin Coves area at Birch Lake. That’s about a mile directly south of Barnsdall High School. The registration fee for the running activities is $10, with no charge for children six years old and younger. Tilley said the class will probably try to set up online registration next year. Payment this year is by check or cash only.
The plan is for the running to begin at about 8:30 a.m.
“I think it will be a beautiful setting out there at the lake” she said. “We were just looking for a fundraiser and the student council normally does a color run but didn’t do it this year so we snatched it up.”
Tilley and Austin Gann, a high school sciences teacher, are class of 2022 sponsors and they are hopeful the 5K and fun run will turn out to be a good fundraiser for the class to keep sponsoring from year to year. Gann noted there have been pretty good crowds in the past for runs.
The venue at Birch Lake will be a good one because there are shady areas for exhausted runners to use for recuperation, restrooms will be available and there will be playgound equipment for small children, Tilley and Gann explained.
“There is a loop out there. It is about a mile,” Tilley said. “We want to make it lighthearted and fun and enjoy being outdoors.”
She added that the class of 2022 hopes to balance a fun event with a message of good heart health. She voiced an interest in trying to set up some speakers and provide a little on-site music, as well.
“We just kind of thought it would be a win-win,” Tilley said.
