OKLAHOMA CITY — Tribal Diagnostics, an American Indian-owned and operated diagnostics laboratory, has formed a new network relationship with UnitedHealthcare, giving millions of plan participants, including people who live in tribal and rural communities, access to laboratory testing services.

People enrolled in UnitedHealthcare employer-sponsored, individual, Medicare and Medicaid health plans now have national access to care from Tribal Diagnostics. Tribal Diagnostics is based in Oklahoma and serves Native Americans in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Utah, with plans to expand to additional states in the coming months.

Services include blood testing and urine drug testing using the most current, sensitive and accurate technology available. Also, Tribal Diagnostics helps monitor patients’ medications to prevent opioid abuse in tribal and rural communities, and serves as a resource by delivering medication monitoring for local care providers who specialize in pain management.

“Tribal Diagnostics values UnitedHealthcare’s support for care providers who serve tribal and rural communities that may have limited access to quality health care,” said Tribal Diagnostics CEO Cory Littlepage. “We believe our new relationship with UnitedHealthcare will help improve health outcomes in Indian Country.”

Native Americans and Alaska Natives are at higher risk for many serious conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and drug-related overdose, compared to other ethnicities. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, Native American deaths involving opioids nearly quadrupled from 1993 to 2013. Illicit drug use among Native Americans is 12 percent, the highest of any ethnicity.

UnitedHealthcare has expanded its resources in tribal communities including coverage for commercial, Medicare and Medicaid health plans, and wellness resources such as health education and information seminars around pain and diabetes management.

“Tribal Diagnostics is an important community partner and offers UnitedHealthcare plan participants, especially people in Indian Country, greater choice and access to quality health care services,” said Megan Haddock, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Oklahoma. “We are grateful for the collaborative relationships we share with care providers like Tribal Diagnostics that are committed to helping communities in need.”
