An impressive lineup of star-studded entertainers is on tap for the Oct. 7 PHS All-School Reunion. Local celebrity Sylvia Herren will sing the National Anthem and join Elvis and Neil Diamond impersonators on stage at the Pawhuska Elks Lodge.

Herren grew up in central Mississippi where she attended schools in Sebastopol, Walnut Grove and Philadelphia. As a young child, Herren credits three iconic singers for influencing her music style.

“I spent many days standing beside my record player and singing along with Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams and Elvis records,” Herren said.

She discovered her love for singing and entertaining when she was invited to sing at a rodeo in Scott County, Mississippi. “I was about 4 years old and sang Hey, Hey Good Lookin’ by Hank Williams,” Herren said. “I remember belting the song out across the airwaves even though I was too small to see over the banister at the crowd.”

Herren moved to Oklahoma in 1984 and spent the next 31 years headlining many local stage and variety shows and playing with several Bartlesville area bands. The versatility of her powerful voice has enabled her to sing a wide range of melodies from classic country, including tunes made famous by Merle Haggard and Patsy Cline, to classic rock and songs by Lynard Skynard and The Eagles. She is also known to hold her own at singing the blues. Spokesman Ron Reed said, “The strength of Sylvia’s voice can raise a roof and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. There is no doubt, this woman has a healthy set of lungs!”

In December 1986, Sylvia married Chet Herren and made her way to Pawhuska where she and Chet still live. In 1997, she and Chet began attending Pawhuska’s First Assembly of God Church where she served as worship leader for over 19 years. Her energy and love for God made her a local favorite during Sunday morning worship services. In 2015, Chet arranged for Sylvia to record her first Gospel CD. Because of the success of this album, Herren is now working on her second release which is expected to be available in early 2018 and will include several original songs.
