Although the recent snow and Arctic cold front makes it seem a little bit unlikely, the baseball and soccer seasons are scheduled to spring forward this week at Pawhuska High School.
The Pawhuska Huskies’ baseball opener is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with a home contest versus Bartlesville’s Wesleyan Christian School.
Ninety minutes later, the Lady Huskie soccer season is slated for a 6 p.m. Thursday kick off. The PHS girls are due to host the Mannford Lady Pirates in a match at Ormand Beach Memorial Stadium.
Another home baseball game is on tap for Friday afternoon against the Tonkawa Buccaneers.
The Huskies also have a road game planned at noon Saturday in Foyil.
Next week, the Pawhuska nine are down for a 4:30 p.m. Monday matchup at Dewey. The Huskies will then begin play next Thursday in Lincoln Christian Tournament at Tulsa.
Under second-year head coach Brian Edwards and veteran assistant Patrick McCarty, the 2014 PHS baseball team will return many of the key elements from last season’s successful squad. The Huskies have been planning games for a Spring Break trip to Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Pawhuska soccer team has a home match set next Tuesday, March 11, against the Victory Christian, with a slightly earlier kickoff time planned for 5:30 p.m. This season’s experienced Lady Huskies’ squad will be led by first-year head coach Giovanie Soliano.
District competition for the PHS soccer team set to start on Tuesday, March 25, with a match at Oologah. Following a non-district contest at Bristow on Friday, March 28, the Lady Huskies will jump headlong into district action that lasts through the end of April.
This year, Pawhuska joins a new 4A District 5 which includes Oologah, Commerce, Miami, Bartlesville Wesleyan Christian, Tulsa Central and Tulsa Rogers, as well as perennial state powerhouse Verdigris.
Lady Huskie road showdowns are slated at Verdigris (against the defending state champion Lady Cardinals) on Tuesday, April 1, and against the Will Rogers Lady Ropers on the north Tulsa field at Washington High School on Thursday, April 3. PHS has a district home test on tap for Friday, April 25, versus the Miami Lady Wardogs.
